Getting started · Chapter 3
A tour of nexpaper
nexpaper has few menu items. On a computer they sit in a bar on the left, on a phone at the bottom. This tour says what is behind each of them and where to find everything that can be set.
The bar
At the very top of the bar are two buttons that bring new things in: “Upload” picks files on your computer, and “Take a photo” opens the camera, a laptop's too. Below them come the five menu items. You can also drag files onto the page from anywhere.
Inbox
Everything that arrives waits in the “Inbox” first. A number on the menu item says how much is there. The fields of every letter are filled in already, and each says where the proposal comes from. You check and file. Only then is the document in the archive. On a computer nexpaper opens the inbox at the start if something is waiting there, the archive otherwise. More in the chapter The inbox.
The other menu items
- Archive. All the filed documents you may see, ordered by month, as a “List” or as “Tiles”. At the top sit the search field, the filters and the button “Export”. More in the chapters Searching and A document.
- Vaults. Your own vault and the shared ones you are a member of, with all their members and rights. This is also where you see what others have shared with you one by one, and your open links to the outside. More in the chapter Inviting.
- Organise. Senders, kinds and tags in one place, per vault, each with the number of documents. This is where you tidy up: rename, merge, delete. More in the chapter Organising.
- Trash. What you delete stays here for 30 days and can be brought back. After that it is gone with its files. Here too a number shows how much is in there.
The round account button
The round button with your picture or your initial sits at the bottom left on a computer and at the top right on a phone. It opens a small menu with “My account”, “Settings”, “About nexpaper” and “Sign out”. Only an operator sees “Settings”.
My account
Everything that concerns only you lives under “My account”, spread over six tabs. The chapter Account goes into detail.
- “Profile” with display name, picture, mail address and “Language”. nexpaper takes the language from the browser on your first visit. It applies to your account, the others choose their own.
- “Security” with password, second factor, passkeys and the signed-in devices.
- “Devices and apps” with paired devices, the shortcut for the iPhone, your API keys and the notifications on your devices.
- “Upload” with the vault your uploads go to, the start on the phone and, if the operator has switched them on, your sender address for the mailbox and your subfolder in the intake folder.
- “AI” with the switch for whether the AI makes proposals for you. You also see what the operator has set up there.
- “Look” with light, dark or like the system, and how the archive shows as a list or as tiles.
Settings
The “Settings” belong to the operator and concern the whole server. There are thirteen tabs. The chapter Running it goes through them, and the main routes are here.
- “Accounts” for inviting, blocking and managing accounts, “Sign-in” with the public address, the second factor, the sign-in provider and the card “Ready for the internet?”.
- “Mail” for the mail server that sends, “Inputs” for the intake folder and the mailbox, “AI” for the AI proposals.
- “Storage” with limits, text recognition, rules, storage and the place of the files on the disk, “Sharing” for links to the outside.
- “Web Push”, “Backup”, “Languages”, “Import” for Paperless-ngx, “Log” and “API”.
What anybody files is in none of these tabs. The operator does not see the personal vaults of the others either.
On the phone
On a phone and in narrow windows the bar moves to the bottom and has the same five items. At the top right sit the round upload button and your account button.
Whoever opens nexpaper on a phone lands on the quick upload once per visit, with big buttons for taking a photo and for choosing a file. “All” leads from there into the whole app. How that works exactly is in the chapter On the phone.
Good to know“About nexpaper” shows which version is running and, after an update, once, what is new. When somebody opens that page, nexpaper asks GitHub at most once a day whether there is a newer version. The operator can switch that off there. nexpaper does not ask by itself in the background.
